GP Fellowship Opportunity
2023-2024!
These fellowships are for any GP in a substantive post in Derbyshire who wants to think outside the box and spend a day a week on health inequality work.
Fellowships can look at any aspect of health, from the provision of vaccination or sexual health programmes to the wider issues of population health in areas of deprivation. What stands out during these fellowships is having remunerated time to address some of the challenges, to work more closely with Public Health and other system colleagues and to have an impact on collaborative working across PCNs, linking with GPPB and GPTF and the ICS.

Breast Cancer and Physical Activity Fellow in association with Her Spirit
Physical activity can not only reduce the risk of breast cancer, it can also reduce the risk of recurrence and can mitigate some of the common side effects of adjuvant treatment. GPTF are working with representatives from Breast Cancer Now, Her Spirit and renowned breast cancer and physical activity experts to look at pathways to support women through their breast cancer journey. The team will be helping create national education materials and this fellowship will focus on implementing these on an ICS footprint i.e., across Derbyshire.

Primary Care Health and Wellbeing
July 2021 – March 2022
Piloting local health and wellbeing support offers for staff working across primary care on behalf of all Derbyshire PCNs In association with LPC, LDN, LOC.
We aim to Standardised provision of wellbeing support for all to include but not be limited to:
✓ CiC Employee Assistance Programme: This offers 24/7 telephone helpline support to staff and family members over 16. All their staff are clinically trained and there is a raft of support available such as carer support, debt and finance counselling, legal advice (similar to Citizens Advice Bureau) and a package of one-to-one telephone counselling for up to 6 sessions.
✓ Rapid access mental health support via the Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing Hub
✓ Staff wellbeing webinars
✓ Implementation of Wellbeing Guardians (WBG) and Wellbeing Champions (WBC) across all areas of primary care, in each organisation, as per the NHS People Plan; empowering this network to introduce health and wellbeing conversations as business as usual.
✓ Support for all primary care sectors in implementing equality, diversity and inclusion support and best practice.
✓ Using education and networking of WBG and WBC across the breadth of primary care in a PCN footprint to strengthen relationships across primary care groups and a greater feeling of shared goals and belonging.
New to Practice GP Fellowships
OPEN FROM 2020- PRESENT
The New to Practice Fellowship Programme is a programme of support, learning and development supported by national funding available to every newly qualified GP. Our Derbyshire programme will meet the needs of newly qualified GPs and fund them to attend professional development sessions, thereby ensuring a smooth transition into independent practice.
- Every newly qualified GP coming out of training will have a guaranteed opportunity to benefit from the scheme for 24 months post CCT.
- The Offer is for those in “substantive GP posts” ie. salaried, partner or portfolio GPs who have qualified at any time since August 2019. Locum GPs will be able to attend sessions but will not be reimbursed.
- You will be paid to attend professional development activities.
- A dedicated education programme including topics such as leadership, mentoring and Quality Improvements has been devised. Our CPD session takes place monthly.
- Funding is available to practices who are looking to recruit a New to Practice GP who requires Tier 2 Sponsorship totalling £500.00

GPTF GP Fellowships
Over the past 2 years GPTF have been running flexible fellowships that have retained GPs in the county by developing leadership skills, project management experience and additional clinical / managerial skills. Our fellowships have led to additional job opportunities, national academic presentations and helped shape support for GPs and practices throughout the county.
As opportunities for new GPs and First5 GPs have increased with the offer of New to Practice and ‘Trailblazer’ Fellowships, we are keen to ensure that GPs in their mid / later career can also access a portfolio career development scheme. We have therefore taken the decision to offer these fellowships to GPs at least 5 years post CCT.

Partnership Development Programme 2023
We will look at skills needed for thriving as a partnership within a discrete GP practice, collaboration, partnership roles in PCNs and also the key relationships within wider health and social care system.
Our programme will be delivered by experienced GP and practice managers leaders with input from HR and finance experts with a proven track record in delivering practice education and support.
Opportunity for admin, reception and non – clinical teams
Would you and your team benefit from a reflective practice session?
Reflective Practice sessions aim to provide a safe, honest and an enlightening environment in which colleagues can discuss and share experiences they may have faced in their practice role.
These sessions are delivered by trained facilitators and provides an opportunity to reflect on the emotional and psychological impact of working in a healthcare environment. It is not therapy or counselling but designed to encourage delegates to be open and frank about their experiences as a way of being able to address any self-help practices and encourage wellbeing.
- Sessions are 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration for a maximum group size of 8
- Sessions aim to help attendees create a ‘meaningful narrative’ about their experiences as an individual within the group
- These sessions are not focused on apportioning blame or service or organisational improvement but a confidential safe space to reflect, learn and move forward

The induction programme is aimed at Practice Managers, Assistant Practice Managers, Operation or PCN Managers working in General Practice in Derby and Derbyshire ICB (including Glossop) who are new to role or that wish to broaden their skills. This follows successful delivery of the two cohorts in 2021 & 2022 with excellent feedback from over 60 delegates. This programme is commissioned via Health Education England funding and is completely free of charge.
Programme Learning Objectives:
- Understand key practical aspects of Practice Management, building on the delegates own experiences either in general practice or across other industry experiences
- Opportunity to apply learning with real GP practice scenarios and relate learning to your own practice
- Learn in a supportive group of local colleagues facilitated by experienced Practice Managers and Guest Speakers
- Establish a Derbyshire ICB network of colleagues for peer support both on and off the programme

This programme is aimed at Non-Clinical and Administration staff within practices that are looking to develop their knowledge skills and understanding across several key areas with the aim of expanding responsibilities and also those developing a career pathway into practice management duties and roles.
This programme is designed to give an “overview” approach to the role.
The programme is new to Derby and Derbyshire and an opportunity for staff to gain an insight into the role of a Practice Manager and/ or expanding knowledge to undertake increased delegated duties.
