Nursing Fellowships

If you have or are looking to recruit a new General Practice Nurse (GPN) and they have limited or no general practice experience the New to practice scheme is ideal.

The New to Practice Fellowship scheme is a programme of support, learning and development supported by national funding available to every newly qualified or new to general practice Nurse. Our Derbyshire programme will meet the needs of newly qualified or new to general practice Nurse and fund them to attend professional development sessions, thereby ensuring a smooth transition into independent practice.

Within 24 months all key topics are covered, from Cytology to Immunisations and Vaccinations.

Key Points

  • Every newly qualified or new to practice Nurse coming out of training will have a guaranteed opportunity to benefit from the scheme for 24 months.

  • Funded to attend professional development activities.

  • A dedicated education programme including topics which include venepuncture, ear care, wound management and cervical cytology. Our CPD sessions take place monthly with the opportunity of monthly Peer calls with our New to Practice Nurse Lead

  • It aims to prepare registered nurses who have not worked in general practice before to have a baseline competence in the General Practice Nursing (GPN) role through both theoretical and practice learning.

Programme Options

During Year One of the 24-month fellowship, the nurse will gain all fundamental skills required to work in primary care. This includes access to training for cervical cytology, immunisations and vaccinations, phlebotomy, contraception and sexual health and more. There are two options to choose from in order to complete this training, the De Montfort University (DMU) route or the CPD route.

DMU

The De Montfort University Practice Nursing PG Cert programme is a 60 credit at level 7 (postgraduate) programme. Successful completion of the programme means the nurse will be awarded with a Post Graduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Practice Nursing.

The CPD route follows the same 24 month programme, without the initial 9-month PG Cert. Courses are available throughout the two years for the nurse and their employers to choose from to be booked directly with HED at any time suited best for you.
